Geese Find the Missing Piece: School Time Riddle Rhymes (I Can Read Book 1) ReviewTHis book has an interesting and innovative plotline, with an invigoratingly different flava of characters. Its socio-political analysis of the economic instability of the eastern prussian oil community is both informative, yet pleasingly origional in its useage of tantalising satire and a darkly written comical side. Overall, Geese Find the Missing Piece is a modern fable of the struggle of the working classes against their masterful social overlords.Geese Find the Missing Piece: School Time Riddle Rhymes (I Can Read Book 1) Overview

The Sweet Life in Paris: Delicious Adventures in the World's Most Glorious - and Perplexing - City ReviewI absolutely adore David Lebovitz. I took a couple cooking classes from him several years ago and am a fan for life. His recipes are the absolute best plus he is smart and hilarious. So I had to have his book which shares incidents from his life since his move to Paris. It's a quick fun read that will ring true to anyone who's spent time there. David spares no one, from the French men in their religion revealing bathing suits to the American tourists in their fanny packs and plastic flip flops. David shares incidents which will have you laughing and glad you live in the U.S. yet earning for the unique charm and culinary delights of Paris. The book is filled with Parisian shopkeepers who would rather smoke outside or text their friends than sell you cheese that you are unworthy of; the mindless buracuracy needed to return an item that broke with its first use; and the endless strikes that usually start right outside his apartment. While David can be acerbic and slightly misanthropic, he's always endearing. Of course, the recipes look amazing and I can hardly wait to try them. The Sweet Life in Paris: Delicious Adventures in the World's Most Glorious - and Perplexing - City Overview

Alphabetter Juice: or, The Joy of Text ReviewThis title grabbed my eye on the new books shelf at the local public library, and I've laughed aloud more in the past two days reading it than in the past several months combined. It is both educational and entertaining. I'm ordering a copy as birthday gift for my son, who is an English major and has of late taken to referring to himself as "a scholar." It's the ideal busy thinking man's bathroom book, filled with etymologies and definitions that are brief, informative, and humorous.Alphabetter Juice: or, The Joy of Text Overview

Madre: Perilous Journeys with a Spanish Noun ReviewI adopted Madre for my "Language and Society in Latin America" course last semester and I plan to use the book again. I assign Madre to build on the student's readings of Octavio Paz, Matthew Gutmann, and Gloria Anzaldua. Understanding how the word "madre" is used in Mexican slang does shed light on gender and sexual identities in Latin America, especially Mexico. The book is popular with students and they especially like the way the author lists and explains a plethora of expressions, such as "me vale madre" and `que padre"; and why, for example, saying "madre" is considered vulgar but "mamá" is not. Additionally, Bakewell's research supports the concept of linguistic relativity, demonstrating how grammatical categories of a language influence native-speaker perception. Her compelling and well-written book also presents a teachable moment regarding feminist ethnography. The author, a "gringa" anthropologist, crosses multiple borders and boundaries in her fieldwork. I recommend the book for those who teach courses on gender and sexuality in Latin America, language and culture, and ethnographic methods and want to balance out the literature assigned on machismo by men with focus on machismo by feminists and other women writers/investigators.

Everywhere the Cow Says "Moo" ReviewI am still waiting for the official review from my niece...but I have no doubt she will enjoy the book. Humorous and well illustrated, the book introduces kids to foreign languages by pointing out how they differ in conveying the sounds of animals. Frankly, I enjoyed it.
My hope is that the early introduction to Spanish, French, and Japanese will give her a leg up in learning the 7 or 8 languages she will undoubtedly master.Everywhere the Cow Says "Moo" Overview

I'll Never Be French (no matter what I do): Living in a Small Village in Brittany ReviewFoolishly, I thought I would read a chapter to see what this book was like, only to find myself sliding through the first half dozen chapters unable to stop, laughing aloud, as if caught in a Chaplinesque journey of an Everyman in France, a Twain's Innocent Abroad in Brittany.
To read this book is to become for a few delightful hours one's own Jacques Tati as one bumbles through a personal "Mr Hulot's Holiday" trying to fit in in France. To give this book is to give the gift of an interlude of a few hour's delight marked by laughter.
The writing itself is seamless and transparent; the reading, a pleasure trip; the main flaw, an ending that arrives too soon.I'll Never Be French (no matter what I do): Living in a Small Village in Brittany Overview

Beyond The Pasta; Recipes, Language and Life with an Italian Family ReviewIt's a memoir, it's a cookbook, it's a travelogue, it's a warm and wonderful look at the amazing journey of a witty and insightful guy. Sometimes books can try to be too much, but this one adds the right amount of everything to leave you delightfully contented.Beyond The Pasta; Recipes, Language and Life with an Italian Family OverviewSeveral years ago, on a break between theatrical gigs in Alabama, Mark traveled to Italy and fell in love with the people, food and culture. Armed with just enough courage, minimal Italian language skills, and a certain proficiency in the kitchen, he enrolled in a full-immersion cooking and language program. He would travel to Viterbo, Italy and live with an Italian family. His teachers were beyond his wildest dreams-he learned to cook from the grandmother, or Nonna, of the family, who prepared every meal in a bustling, busy household, as women in her family have done for generations. Her daughter, Alessandra, taught him the language with patience and precision. Besides culinary secrets and prepositions, they opened their lives to him, and made him a real part of their extensive family.Though the book contains authentic, delicious family recipes Nonna shared with Mark, Beyond the Pasta delves into food memoir subject matter not found in a typical cookbook. It was the day-to-day shopping with Nonna, exploring the countryside and le gelaterie, where he truly developed his language skills, and a new, more joyful and uniquely Italian way of looking at the world.

Walter le chien qui pete: Walter the Farting Dog, French-Language Edition (French Edition) ReviewIs this the greatest kids' book ever? I certainly wouldn't try to make a case for that. Does it deserve the venom that some of the reviewers have directed at it? Hardly, but some people are coming as close as they can to alleging plagarism on the part of the author. Fart plagarism --- I never thought I would live to see the day.
Honestly, if anything written from this point forward involving dogs and flatulence is immediately going to be subjected to allegations of plagarism, then we might as well take the allegations to their logical extremes. I would note that John Irving featured a farting dog in the 1981 novel "Hotel New Hampshire," which I guess means all farting dog books since then are simply John Irving ripoffs.
For those reviewers who were shocked, shocked I tell you, that the book's content was, dare I say it, a little crude --- I would simply suggest that you read the book's title a little more diligently. There is no hidden agenda here --- what you see is what you get, and really, it is not nearly as vulgar as it could be. Good grief.
As to the book itself --- it is a fairly entertaining book with amusingly bizarre artwork and some pretty amusing dialogue. An adult with some talent with sound effects could have a great deal of fun entertaining the youngsters, as I did. Books that are as much fun for the adult reader as the youthful listener don't come down the pike every day.Walter le chien qui pete: Walter the Farting Dog, French-Language Edition (French Edition) Overview

Talk to the Snail: Ten Commandments for Understanding the French ReviewDead-on introduction to French culture with wry humor. American readers may be uncomfortable with some of the correct reporting of how French intellectuals see us. But the author is right. On the other hand, the phrase book sections are comic relief of the finest sort. And he saves the real truth, and the best, for the last. Highly recommended before any adventure in France as a way to stave off stress.Talk to the Snail: Ten Commandments for Understanding the French Overview

Pardon My French: Unleash Your Inner Gaul ReviewThis is a fun and interesting read if you are curious about the uniqueness of the French and their culture. The entries are organized by subjects such a food, getting about, education, and many others. It is not meant to be a deep analysis of the origins of these behaviors but it does at times appear to be a bit superficial. I have spent a lot of time in France and, overall, I found the vignettes and topics to be pretty accurate. The writer's style is straight forward, humorous, and presented in good context. Anyone planning to be in France for some extended time should find the book enjoyable and helpful.Pardon My French: Unleash Your Inner Gaul OverviewThe French you learned in school won't get you far! Pardon My French is an entertaining and useful guide to the words and phrases every Francophile, traveler, student, and word maven should know, with fascinating lore and tidbits that make sense of the Gallic mind-set. Englishman Charles Timoney was thrown into French life headfirst twenty-five years ago when he and his wife moved to native France. He had studied French in school, but his memory of vocabulary lists and verb-conjugation drills proved no match for day-to-day living and communicating with French coworkers. As he blundered towards fluency, he collected the idioms and phrases that no one ever taught him in a classroom and that wonderfully (sometimes wickedly) epitomized l'esprit francais. Pardon My French includes insider's language tips for dining, shopping, understanding French slang, and more. Selections include: • Faire un canard, which literally means "to do a duck,"but also refers to dunking sugar lumps in coffee and is the preferred way to get a kick of sugar caffeine in France. • Tablette de chocloat, which literally means "chocolate bar," but is also the term for a finely muscled male stomach in France. Since the English equivalent is a "six pack," it's a splendid example of how differently we see things! Packed throughout with whimsical cartoons and trivia (including the words to "La Marseillaise"), Pardon My French is a marvelous armchair trip abroad.
