I Can Sing En Francais: Fun Songs for Learning French ReviewI bought this book thinking it also had the cassette with it. It does not. Customer reviews which write about the cassette are followed with a note from Amazon that it is a review for the "Hard Cover" edition.
If you notice right below the reading level for this item, it says "Hard Cover". So I thought that this was the edition that includes the cassette. It does not.
The book seems great otherwise, but you MUST know French and be able to read music though. This book is great for naming objects and days of the week the repetitive nature of the ryhmes make it easy for the child to learn. Since she knew and loved the english version, this was a great way to learn some french.
I recomend this with Ours Brun, Dis-Moi (Brown Bear What Do You See), Bonsoir Lune (Goodnight Moon) and Devine Combien Je t Aime (Guess how much I love you). Harry Learns French ReviewI purchased this book for my (now 6 year old) daughter a few months ago and it's among her most favorite books. She already has some basic skills in French but even for those who do not have any French, this is an excellent pick. The presentation is good allowing any non-French speaking child to understand the meaning of the French words and phrases.
Firstly, the amount of French vocabulary is decent and covers a wide variety of subjects (numbers, colors, animals, family members, activities, etc.) Secondly, as a French teacher what I love most is its inclusion of culture related items (descriptions of "boules", brief explanation of July 14th, different kinds of specialty shops, etc.).
My daughter loves the presentation although my youngest thinks the characters look "mad" (it's that harder edge graphic style- not my favorite but still eye-catching). There's a "pop-up" dictionary with each section of vocabulary but the true bonus is the accompanying CD-rom- perfect for children to hear how the vocabulary is properly pronounced (although the interactivity of the cd-rom is quite limited it's still a great extra).
As someone who is always collecting French language books, it's nice to see a story that's more contemporary- evidenced by the explanation of Euros as opposed to French Francs.
This is a great addition to any library whether you're looking to teach your child French or just widen her knowledge of other cultures.Harry Learns French Overview

There are 21 songs with lyrics written in French; the audio CD is very lovely and the audio is clear. Because the lyrics in French are included, we can sing along. The audio CD also includes the written passages in the book, which are descriptions of the author's advent and Christmas traditions. The illustrations are very lovely. The songs include: The Advent Song, What did you see Sheperdess?, Away in a Manger, Saint Nicholas Poem, Deck the Halls, O Christmas Tree, The Little Drummer Boy, Joy to the World, Bring a Torch, He is born the Holy Child, O Holy Night, Gloria, The Ox and Grey Donkey, Father Christmas, Pat-a-pan, Silent Night, Auld Lang Syne, Jingle Bells, March of the Kings, Let There be Peace on Earth. The only disappointment I have is that the lyrics are not translated into English for a few of the songs, but that is a something I can overlook when I love the book and CD overall.

Teach Me Everyday French (Teach Me... (Teach Me Tapes)) ReviewTo qualify, I am no expert in acquiring languages. However, I will say that I was a bit disappointed with this "program". First the book is too cartoonish and simple for my tastes, offering little substance besides providing the words to the songs on the cd (and without too much pronunciation help). The concept of the program is great- taking familiar English songs and including them in both languages. I have heard some people comment that it is good to have the French quickly spoken, as if by a native speaker. Well, that is the case with a good chunk of this cd: the first song is practically impossible to make out in French (at least for an adult with no French knowledge)- what's the point if you can't understand her enough to learn the French version of the song? Now, I do have confidence in the "absorbent minds" of young children, so maybe it will work on a more absorbent mind than my own. Thus, if you are looking for an approach based on simple exposure of infants and very small children to open their ears to the language so to speak, (and not a real teaching "program") this may be for you. I will say also, that my 3 1/2 year old really enjoys the music and has picked up a few phrases from the cd in only a few listens (you can't beat the familiarity of the songs); her enjoyment brings this up to four stars. And again, far be it for me to underestimate the power of their language acquisition skills in the early years!
Update: We haven't learned French yet, but my daughter still enjoys listening to the music and we've picked up a few phrases-- so I will emphasize the value of this cd for EXPOSURE to foreign languages!
