The Ogre's Embrace ReviewAs with many authors forging fiction in a language besides English, Rachid Mimouni has never gotten the recognition and audience he deserves in the US. With a majority of his works in French untranslated, we only have "Honor of the Tribe" and this short story collection, "The Ogre's Embrace," to dazzle us with his powerful prose.
This short story collection takes place almost entirely in Algeria or another unnamed North African setting. The protagonists are usually single men, eccentrics, propelled by singular passions that set them apart from the masses. But the true center of every story and of the book as a whole, is the State. This is the 'Ogre' to which the title refers. And it is through his brilliant depictions of everyday lives that collide in a variety of ways, some comic and some tragic, with the State that Mimouni holds our attention. Corruption, mendacity, sloth, wastefulness, arrogance, and a complete disengagement with the people's daily concerns mark this terrible creature.
While European reviewers points to obvious influences from Kafka and Camus, Mimouni creates more of an African feel to my eye. As with other Africans dismayed by the course of post-colonial history, with native elites dashing the post-independence hopes of their nations, Mimouni writes with an ironic edge yet has a great deal of compassion for his characters. Truly, one hopes that translations of his other works into English are forthcoming. The Ogre's Embrace Overview
