Languages and Communities in Early Modern Europe (The Wiles Lectures) ReviewI write a lot of academic articles on philosophical literature of the period dealing with the theme of language, and this book really provides a wonderful historical context to help situate my own literary and philosophical analysis. Burke's discussion is both detailed and far-ranging. The manuscript for the project I am currently working on cites *Languages and Communities* a number of times. Burke's book is truly an excellent contribution to the field and is one of my personal favorites. For anyone working in the fields of history of linguistics or history of the philosophy of language, this book is a must-read.Languages and Communities in Early Modern Europe (The Wiles Lectures) OverviewPeter Burke explores major themes in the social and cultural history of the languages spoken or written in Europe between the invention of printing and the French Revolution. One theme is the relation between languages and communities and the place of language as a way of identifying others, as well as a symbol of one's own identity. A second, linked theme is that of competition: between Latin and the vernaculars, different vernaculars, dominant and subordinate, and different varieties of the same vernacular.
