Is this book a narrative history of southern Louisiana? No. Is this book a narrative history of Acadian and Cajun culture? No. Is this book a narrative history of anything? Not really. Is it a travel guide or an architectural catalog? No.
Is this book a magnificent portrait of modern (and past) Acadian and Cajun culture, architecture, land, water, food, music and language? Yes. Is it filled with startling color photographs? Yes. Does the text serve to frame the photography well? Yes. Is the text substantial enough that it could stand alone as a book in itself? Yes. In fact, the author, Dr. Brasseaux is the leading scholar in his field.
If it's detailed academic history, or genealogy you're looking for, this book won't serve you well. If it's a sophisticated armchair trip to Cajun country, or an honest photographic history of this rich cultural region you want, there's no better book. This book will make you catch your breath, and any book that does that to me gets a "six star" rating.
