So much has been written about Proust, so why read another book on "A La Recherche"?
Luckhust's study has already won recognition among Proust scholars for its sensitivity to his writing. But what I found moving - as a lay reader of Proust - is the degree to which Luckhurst is alive to "A La Recherche" in all its richness and complexity.
After reading her "Science and Structure" I was struck by how many contemporary works on Proust have an unconsciously limited or impoverished expectation of the novel.
This study is profoundly different. Luckhurst engages with Proust's desire to write a novel that is literally all encompassing - and in particular, in its desire to encompass the life of the mind and body. She discerns an underlying struggle - which also generates his writing - between parsimony and abundance, and in doing so recovers the exhilaration of Proust's work.
